Wooden toys are not only durable and tactile, but they also have a timeless appeal that makes them ideal for passing down through generations. To keep them in tip-top condition we recommend inspecting and cleaning them regularly to ensure they remain safe for little ones to play with.  Here is a simple guide on how to clean your wooden toys effectively.

Why is it important to clean wooden toys?

Like any toy, wooden toys will accumulate dirt and germs over time, especially with frequent use. Regular cleaning not only helps to maintain their appearance and keep them hygienic, but also offers an opportunity for inspection to ensure they remain free of damage (splinters, chips etc.) and safe for children to play with.

You will need:

To clean wooden toys, you will need a few simple supplies:

  • Mild detergent
  • Warm water
  • Soft clean cloth or sponge
  • White vinegar
  • Soft bristle toothbrush
  • Paper towel or hand towel
  • Bees wax or linseed oil *

Cleaning process:

Follow these steps to clean your wooden toys:

1. Remove any visible dirt

Start by wiping the toy with a dry cloth to remove any visible dust or debris.

2. Prepare a cleaning solution

Mix a small amount of mild detergnet with warm water and a dash of vinegar to create a gentle cleaning solution. Vinegar is non-toxic and has natural disinfecting properties that will aid in the removal of bacteria and germs.

3. Clean the toys

Dip the clean cloth into the cleaning solution and wring out any excess liquid. Gently wipe down the toy, making sure to clean all surfaces thoroughly. Use the soft bristle tooth brush to gently remove any stubborn grime and access hard to reach areas.

4. Thoroughly wipe dry

Once you have finished cleaning, thoroughly wipe the toy dry with a clean, soft towel. It is importantly that you dry the toy thoroughly to prevent potential water damage and warping of the wood.

5. Apply a natural finish *

If the toy is not painted or lacquered,  you can apply a natural finish like beeswax or linseed oil for added protection and a fresh look. Simply dab a small amount onto the toy and then gently but thoroughly buff in with a clean, soft cloth.

(* Applies to natural wood toys only and is not suitable for painted or lacquered wooden toys as it may damage the finish)

With proper care, your wooden toys will continue to bring enjoyment for many years to come.

NEVER

  • Put wooden toys in the dishwasher or microwave .
  • Soak wooden toys in water (they will expand and warp)
  • Leave wooden toys outside in the weather
  • Store wooden toys in damp areas or direct sunlight
