Bringing Back the Art of Letter Writing: 7 Ways to Inspire Young Writers

In a world of instant messages and emoji reactions, there is still something wonderfully magical about receiving a handwritten letter.

The careful choice of words. The personality captured in every loop and wobble of handwriting. The anticipation of waiting for a reply—and the excitement of discovering your name on an envelope in the letterbox.

Letter writing may be becoming a lost art, but we think it is one worth rediscovering, especially with children.

Why Letter Writing Matters for Children

Beyond its literacy benefits, letter writing gives children an opportunity to slow down and think about someone else. Whether they are writing to a grandparent, cousin, friend or pen pal, they must consider what the other person might enjoy hearing and what questions they would like to ask.

This helps nurture empathy, patience and thoughtfulness while making writing feel purposeful rather than simply another task.

Letter writing can also:

  • Strengthen handwriting and fine motor skills
  • Encourage storytelling and creative expression
  • Build vocabulary and confidence
  • Help children practise organising their thoughts
  • Create meaningful connections with family and friends
  • Give children a genuine sense of pride and accomplishment

For younger children, a letter does not need to contain perfectly formed sentences. A colourful drawing, a few copied words or a message dictated to an adult can be just as meaningful. What matters most is the connection being created.

And, of course, there is nothing quite like the joy of receiving a reply addressed especially to you.

7 Ways to Encourage Children to Write Letters

1. Begin a Pen-Pal Friendship

Connect your child with a cousin, family friend or classmate who lives in another town—or perhaps another country.

Knowing there is a real person waiting to hear from them gives children a wonderful reason to write. Some schools also coordinate pen-pal programs, so it may be worth asking your child’s teacher.

For safety, adults should always manage addresses and help choose trusted recipients.

2. Write to Grandparents and Relatives

Grandparents and older relatives often treasure handwritten letters from children.

Set aside time once a month to write together. It is a beautiful family ritual that strengthens relationships and creates something precious for the recipient to keep.

Children could share a recent adventure, draw a picture or ask a few questions about what life was like when their grandparent was young.

3. Make It a Special Occasion

Create a dedicated letter-writing afternoon with a favourite snack, gentle music and a beautiful selection of stationery laid out on the table.

When writing feels like an occasion rather than a chore, children are much more likely to embrace it.

Even a small ritual—such as choosing a special pencil or adding the stamp together—can make the experience memorable.

4. Let Them Decorate and Personalise

Bring out the stickers, coloured pencils, stamps and washi tape, and encourage children to make each letter their own.

They might draw a border, create a picture for the recipient or decorate the envelope with hearts and stars. The more creative freedom children have, the more invested they become in the process.

5. Write Letters Together

Children learn so much by watching the adults around them.

Sit alongside your child and write a letter of your own while they create theirs. Seeing a parent or carer enjoying the same activity helps writing feel worthwhile, meaningful and delightfully grown-up.

6. Keep a “Letters Sent” Box

Before posting each letter, take a photograph or make a copy and keep it in a special box or album.

Looking back at their earlier letters can show children how much their handwriting and confidence have developed. Over time, the collection also becomes a beautiful family keepsake.

You might also keep the replies alongside them, creating a treasured record of the correspondence.

7. Write a Letter to Their Future Self

Invite your child to write a letter to the person they will be next year.

They could include their current favourite toy, book, food or activity, something they are proud of and something they hope to learn. Add a drawing, seal the envelope and choose a future date on which to open it.

It is a playful, pressure-free way to begin writing—and a lovely surprise to rediscover later.

A Little Letter Can Mean So Much

Letter writing does not need to be lengthy or perfect. A few thoughtful words, a colourful drawing or a page covered in stickers can brighten someone’s day and create a lasting memory.

A beautiful letter-writing set makes a thoughtful gift for birthdays, holidays or simply an afternoon spent creating something meaningful.
