How to Wash Your Jellycat Soft Toy: Complete Care Guide

Keeping Your Beloved Jellycat Clean and Cuddly

Jellycat soft toys are treasured companions that bring joy to children and adults alike. With their irresistibly soft fur and adorable designs, it's no wonder they become constant cuddle buddies! But with all that love comes the inevitable need for cleaning. Whether it's an ice cream mishap, outdoor adventures, or just everyday snuggles, knowing how to properly wash your Jellycat is essential to keeping it looking and feeling its hygienic best!

Since we first published our popular guide on washing Jellycats back in 2019, we've received countless questions from customers about the best care practices. This updated guide brings you everything you need to know about keeping your Jellycat clean and cuddly for years to come.

Before You Begin: Check the Care Label

Every Jellycat comes with a care label that provides specific washing instructions. Always check this first, as some Jellycats have special requirements based on their materials, embellishments, or construction. The care label is typically sewn into a seam and will indicate whether your toy is:

  • Machine washable
  • Hand wash only
  • Surface clean only

Method 1: Machine Washing Your Jellycat

Although spot cleaning is usually best, some Jellycat soft toy designs are machine washable. Here's how to do it safely:

What You'll Need:

  • Mild, gentle detergent
  • A mesh laundry bag or pillowcase
  • Access to a washing machine

Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Jellycat
Place your Jellycat inside a mesh laundry bag or tie it securely in a pillowcase - this helps to protect the toy during the wash cycle.

2. Choose the Right Settings
Use a gentle or delicate cycle and ensure the correct temperature (usually a maximum of 30 degrees) is set. Hot water can cause fiber damage and shrinkage. It is also important to select a delicate spin cycle to minimize stress on the toy's construction.

3. Always Use a Mild Detergent
Add a small amount of mild, gentle detergent. Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or other harsh chemicals as these can damage the soft pile, effect colours and potentially irritate sensitive skin.

4. Wash with Similar Items
Other soft, same colour items like sheets or pillowcases  can provide cushioning during the wash cycle. Never wash with heavy items like jeans or items with zippers, buckles or buttons that could damage or discolor the toy.

Method 2: Hand Washing Your Jellycat

For Jellies with delicate features, embroidered details, or those labeled "hand wash only," this gentler method is best:

What You'll Need:

  • Clean basin or sink
  • Mild, gentle detergent
  • Lukewarm water
  • Clean towels

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Washing Solution
Fill a clean basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Mix gently until suds form.

2. Submerge and Gently Agitate
Place your Jellycat in the water and gently squeeze the soapy water through the toy. Pay special attention to any particularly dirty areas, but avoid scrubbing as this can damage the pile.

3. Rinse Thoroughly
Drain the soapy water and refill with clean lukewarm water. Gently squeeze (never wring) the toy to rinse out all the detergent. You may need to rinse several times until the water runs clear and no soap remains.

4. Remove Excess Water
Gently squeeze (don't wring!) excess water from the toy. Press the Jellycat between clean, dry towels to absorb as much moisture as possible and then air dry out of direct sunlight and weather.

Method 3: Spot Cleaning for Quick Touch-Ups

For minor spills or small dirty spots, spot cleaning is often sufficient and helps preserve your Jellycat:

1. Mix a Solution
Combine a small amount of mild detergent with lukewarm water.

2. Apply Gently
Dip a clean, soft cloth into the solution and gently dab the soiled area. Avoid rubbing, which can spread the stain or damage the fibres.

3. Rinse and Blot
Use a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue, then blot dry with a clean towel.

Drying Your Jellycat: The Most Important Step

Proper drying is crucial to maintaining your Jellycat's shape and softness:

Air Drying (Recommended)

  • Gently reshape your Jellycat while it's still damp
  • Place it in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources
  • Turn the toy occasionally to ensure even drying
  • Allow at least 24-48 hours for complete drying, depending on size
  • Once dry, gently brush the fur with a soft brush (such as a baby brush) to restore fluffiness

Tumble Drying (Use with Caution)

While some Jellycats can be tumble dried on a low, cool setting, we generally recommend air drying to preserve the toy's quality. If you must use a dryer:

  • Use the lowest heat setting or air-dry/no-heat setting only
  • Place the Jellycat in a mesh delicates bag
  • Add a few clean, dry towels to cushion the toy
  • Check frequently and remove while still slightly damp to finish air drying
  • Never use high heat, as this can damage fibres or cause shrinkage

Special Care Tips for Different Jellycat Types

Jellycats with Beans or Pellets

Many Jellycats contain bean bags or pellets in their paws or bottoms for weight and texture. These can usually be washed, but check the care label. If in doubt, spot clean these areas instead.

Jellycats with Embroidered Features

Toys with embroidered eyes, noses, or details should be handled gently. Hand washing or using a mesh bag in the machine will help protect these features.

Large Jellycats

Bigger Jellycats may not fit comfortably in a standard washing machine. For these, hand washing in a bathtub or spot cleaning may be your best options.

Amuseables Collection

The quirky Amuseables range (like our Amuseables Camembert and Amuseables Mia Macaron) often have unique shapes and features.  Some designs may be machine washable, however, spot cleaning or a gentle hand wash is usually best. Remember to check  the washing instructions of the products sewn in label.

How Often Should You Wash Your Jellycat?

The frequency of washing depends on use and soilage. Remember, over-washing can wear out your Jellycat faster, so spot clean when possible and save full washes for when they're truly needed.

What NOT to Do When Washing Your Jellycat

  • ❌ Don't use bleach or harsh chemicals
  • ❌ Don't use hot water
  • ❌ Don't wring or twist the toy
  • ❌ Don't use high heat when drying
  • ❌ Don't dry in direct sunlight (can fade colours)
  • ❌ Don't iron your Jellycat
  • ❌ Don't dry clean unless specifically indicated on the care label
  • ❌ Don't ignore any care instructions provided on the sewn in label

Restoring Fluffiness After Washing

If your Jellycat seems a bit flat after washing, try these tips:

  • Gently brush the fur with a soft-bristled brush once completely dry
  • Fluff and pat the toy to redistribute the filling
  • For particularly matted areas, use a wide-toothed comb very gently

Keeping Your Jellycat Fresh Between Washes

Extend the time between washes with these simple tips:

  • Keep Jellycats away from food and drink when possible
  • Store in a clean, dry place when not in use
  • Gently brush with soft baby brush to remove dust and debris
  • Air out occasionally in fresh air (but not direct sunlight)

When to Replace Rather Than Wash

While Jellycat plush toys are remarkably durable they are not indestructible, so there may come a time when washing may not be enough:

  • Significant tears or holes that compromise the structure and safety of the product
  • Persistent odours that don't wash out
  • Loose or damaged safety features (especially for toys used by babies and children under the age of 3)

.Whether it's a classic Bashful Bunny, a whimsical Amuseables character, or any other design from the wonderful Jellycat range, these simple care steps will help keep your soft toy looking and feeling its best.
